Bahrain National Day 2016
Today’s Doodle celebrates Bahrain National Day with an image of Qal'at al-Bahrain, or the Bahrain Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The fort is an important archaeological site that proves a human presence existed in Bahrain as far back as 2300 BCE.
The celebrations today honor a more recent time in Bahrain’s history, when on December 16, 1961, Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa’s ascended to the throne. Nearly a decade later in 1971, Bahrain declared independence from the British, becoming its own nation. National Day is celebrated the entire month of December with fireworks displays, air parades, and carnivals, among other festivities.
