Armenia Independence Day 2019
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle depicts Armenia’s tricolor flag, which will fly all across the Eurasian country in honor of Armenian Independence Day.
According to the nation’s constitution, the flag’s colors describe the Armenian people: the red stripe at the top represents their resilience, the blue stripe in the middle stands for their desire to live under peaceful skies, and the orange stripe at the bottom symbolizes their hardworking nature and creative talent.
Built upon the foundations of one of the world’s oldest civilizations, parts of modern Armenia were governed by Russia during the 19th century. On this day in 1991, citizens of this country in the mountainous Caucasus region between Asia and Europe took part in a referendum, with more than 99 percent voting in favor of independence from the Soviet Union.
September 21st has since become a public holiday, with the main celebration taking place in the capital city of Yerevan. Cultural exhibitions and concerts featuring traditional Armenian music and dance are held in the main square, alongside a military parade and display of fireworks to celebrate the nation’s independence.
Happy Independence Day, Armenia!
