Cendrakasih was born in Magelang, Central Java, on this day in 1938.

About the Doodle:

Cendrakasih’s father was a comedian and her mother was an actress. In her teens, she followed her parents’ footsteps to a career in entertainment. In 1955, she made her debut appearance in Oh, Ibuku (Oh, My Mother). That same year, she acted alongside her own mother in Gambang from Semarang and landed her first lead role in Ibu dan Putri (Mom and Daughter).

Her charismatic performance in Serampang 12, a popular dance film centered on a coming of age love story, enchanted viewers across Indonesia. Her fame skyrocketed afterward. Over the next few decades, Cendrakasih landed well-over 100 roles in notable shows and films like Taman Harapan (Garden of Hope) and Si Doel Anak Sekolahan (Doel the Schoolchild).

Her poignant performances won her two Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Bandung Film Festival and the Indonesian Movie Awards.
