Algeria Independence Day 2024
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Algerian Independence Day. On this day in 1962, the largest country in Africa became a sovereign nation, ending over a hundred years of French rule. This national holiday honors the hardships the country’s people faced on the path to independence which included an eight-year long war.
On the eve of Independence Day, the capital city of Algiers is flooded with citizens from around the country. Patriotic songs thump beneath the celebratory feet of folk group ensembles and military members as they parade through the heart of the city. National flags decorate homes and buildings — just like the one in today’s Doodle.
The day is filled with speeches and military demonstrations with fighter planes flying overhead. Algerians celebrate by wearing white and green to parades, parties and concerts alongside spending time with their loved ones.
Happy Independence Day, Algeria!
