Albania Independence Day 2023
Today’s annual Doodle celebrates Albania Independence Day! This national holiday commemorates the struggles and sacrifices made to achieve freedom after more than four centuries of foreign rule. On this day in 1912, the All-Albanian Congress gathered at the Assembly of Vlorë and signed the declaration of independence.
On Independence Day, Albanians come together and attend festivities like parades, firework shows, concerts, and more. Most museums and historical sites are also open to the public, allowing visitors to reflect on the country’s road to freedom. The most popular event takes place at Skanderbeg Square in Tirana, where government officials give speeches as the national flag waves high in the sky — like in today’s artwork.
Food also plays an important role during Independence Day celebrations. Traditional national dishes like byrek (savory pies stuffed with filling), tava e kosit (lamb and rice baked with yogurt), and qofte (meatballs seasoned with spices) are enjoyed by all. And for those with a sweet tooth, baklava (a sweet dessert with layers of nuts) remains a mouthwatering must-eat delicacy that never disappoints.
Happy Independence Day, Albania!
